The short answer
On Experimental 0.5, buy or claim ammo at the lodge shop, assign it to loadout slots and manually equip a compatible type to a rifle. Carrying ammo is not the same as loading the weapon.
Before you start
- Experimental branch only. Default does not yet have this documented ammo-switching system.
Ammo slot planner
Count the ammo sets you can carry under the announced Experimental 0.5 rules. This does not calculate bullet counts or weapon compatibility.
Duplicate ammo types use separate sets. After packing, manually equip compatible ammo to the rifle.
Set up the ammo loadout
The announcement places ammo purchases at the lodge laptop or its vicinity menu. A default ammo type is free for each weapon; alternatives cost in-game money. No real-money purchase is implied.
- Open the lodge shop through its laptop or vicinity menu.
- Claim the free default type or buy the desired alternative with in-game currency.
- Open weapon storage and place ammo in the available loadout slots.
- Assign a compatible ammo type to the rifle manually.
- Check the HUD and radial menu before leaving.

Backpack capacity
The experimental announcement allows two ammo sets without a backpack, four with the default backpack and six with the big backpack. Duplicate types can occupy separate slots. These are sets/slots, not a bullet count or weight allowance.
| Loadout | Ammo sets |
|---|---|
| No backpack | 2 |
| Default backpack | 4 |
| Big backpack | 6 |

What changed in 0.5.0.209722?
The latest patch adds red/green weapon-ammo compatibility colouring, a HUD ammo indicator and corrected radial-menu details. It fixes old-save weapons showing zero damage/energy, weapons that could not reload and storage failing to refill free ammo. Older posts listing those behaviours as current need this correction.

Limits that remain unverified
The initial ammo post lists several weapon-specific limitations and no alternate bow ammo. The latest patch does not individually resolve every entry. This guide does not assert a complete compatibility matrix; confirm the selected weapon and ammo in the current interface.
