The short answer
Update 0.4.1 brings two-player co-op to the default branch. The launch FAQ’s statement that multiplayer is still planned is now out of date.
Use the shipped status
The official 0.4.1 post is the baseline for current default co-op. It also reports fixes involving fast travel, tents, map markers and vehicle passengers. The roadmap’s earlier experimental status should not override that later release.

Dog tracking has a branch-specific fix
The latest Experimental patch fixes a client being unable to issue Track Blood to their dog. The default patch in the same announcement lists only placeholder-art replacements. Do not assume the experimental dog fix has shipped on default merely because the two notes share a page.

Plan a useful test session
Use the same branch and note both players’ builds. Our suggested first check is a short hunt followed by a normal leave/rejoin, recording which player owns the world and which progress persists. We have not independently tested server hosting, crossplay or save transfer between platforms.
