Mods, Steam Workshop, mod.io and TF2 compatibility

Where Transport Fever 3 mods come from, what happened to Workshop and why an old TF2 collection needs adaptation.

The short answer

Transport Fever 3 uses one integrated mod browser built with mod.io across Steam, Epic, GOG, PS5 and Xbox. The current Urban Games FAQ explicitly says Steam Workshop is not included. Transport Fever 2 mods do not work directly in TF3; authors can adapt them.

Before you start

  • The full game had not launched when this guide was checked.
  • Do not change a save or install files from an unverified source on the strength of prerelease documentation.

Use the integrated Mod Hub

Urban Games describes a Mod Hub in the main menu where players browse, subscribe and receive updates. A mod.io web browser can also manage the collection. The current support FAQ says the same integrated library serves every launch platform.

The Workshop decision is settled for launch

The July dev blog still described Steam Workshop as undecided. The newer support FAQ supersedes that wording: Steam Workshop is not included because Urban Games chose a single cross-platform destination. Steam players use the integrated browser too.

TF2 mods require an author update

The Curated Mods FAQ says Transport Fever 2 mods are not directly compatible. Authors can adapt them using updated tools and documentation. Basic conversion support does not turn an untouched TF2 download into a TF3 mod.

Do not copy an old collection into a new save and assume its assets, scripts or dependencies will load. Check the mod author's TF3 release and platform support.

Curated is a quality program, not the whole library

Modding is open to players outside the Curated Mods Program, and all mods are described as free to download. Curated mods are available on every platform; Urban Games says most other mods will be too. That wording does not guarantee every general mod on every console.

Manual distribution remains, but the workflow needs a launch test

The FAQ retains manual downloads outside the in-game browser, while the dev blog explicitly discusses manual installation for PC and Mac. The checked sources do not provide a finished folder path, save-migration procedure or console sideload workflow. Those instructions belong in a hands-on update after release.
