The short answer
Physical ranged attacks have Close and Far bands. The developer says Far hits lose 25% of their damage, while attacks outside maximum Attack Distance cannot hit. Magic is described as ignoring the bands while still obeying maximum distance. These are September 2025 development rules, not tested launch values.
Read the grid before choosing the shot
Most bows are described as dividing range equally between Close and Far. Most guns keep Close effectiveness across three quarters of their range. “Most” matters: inspect the actual weapon instead of applying that split to every item.
| Position | Published rule |
|---|---|
| Close, inside the dotted boundary | Full ranged damage |
| Far, beyond the boundary but in range | 25% less ranged damage |
| Outside Attack Distance | Target cannot be hit |
| Magic within Attack Distance | Ignores Close/Far damage reduction |

Compare the shot with the movement risk
Kingy’s suggested comparison includes both damage and exposure. The developer notes that displacement can change firing bands, so an ally’s shove may matter even when it is not the largest immediate hit.
- Select the attack and check the target’s displayed band.
- Compare staying in Far range with moving into Close range.
- Inspect enemy firing positions before moving closer.
- Check the Timeline for enemies who could act before your next turn.

Use the penalty without inventing a damage formula
A 25% reduction leaves 75% of a value before any other unverified interactions. That arithmetic does not establish the game’s rounding, armor order or critical-hit formula. Use the current attack preview to judge a possible knockout; no damage calculator is published here.
