The short answer
Check the soil after harvesting, use the Watering Can’s secondary action, and inspect the exact farming-bench tier and ingredient names. Several launch-era farm instructions changed in Updates 2–6.
Before you start
- A Farmer’s Workbench, Hoe, Watering Can and the planted crop’s name.
- Use the stable Update 6 rules here; modded growth settings can differ.
Check the block underneath the crop
Tilled Soil now becomes Dirt after a crop is harvested. Re-till before replanting. Update 6 also fixed crop growth stages being lost on reload and saplings failing because their roots lacked room.
If a crop still stalls, compare one affected plant with a small fresh plot before rebuilding the entire farm. Record the crop, soil, world version and enabled mods for a useful bug report.

Use the current watering and harvesting controls
The Watering Can uses the secondary interaction. Hold it to charge a 3×3 watering area; capacity increased to 50. Check your rebound controls if the expected mouse button does nothing.
Copper and Iron Sickles are crafted at the Farming Workbench. Holding the input repeats the swing. The updated recipes require specific items, so a similar resource type may not satisfy the recipe.

Understand the crop-specific exceptions
Eternal Corn yields 2–4 Corn in Update 6. Newly planted Aubergines and Lettuce return their seeds when broken. Those rules are crop-specific; do not apply their yield or seed return to every plant.
Update 2 protects Eternal crops from accidental weapon damage and returns seeds when fully grown Eternal crops are broken. Harvest prompts and deliberate breaking are different actions. Keep seed stock until you have confirmed your own replanting loop.

When an upgrade recipe disagrees with a guide
Check the entire recipe in the active game build, including the exact Essence type. Published farming guides disagree on some tier costs; this edition does not combine those incompatible tables. The confirmed tier changes above help identify an outdated walkthrough without pretending the full cost database is complete.
