The short answer
Craft the Backpack unlock in the Workbench’s Tinkering section with 8 Iron Ingots and 16 Medium Leather. Then use the crafted consumable; crafting alone does not activate the extra space.
Before you start
- Make leather from the matching hide at a Tanning Rack.
- Keep combat essentials somewhere you can reach quickly.
Use the unlock item
- Craft the Backpack unlock.
- Hold the resulting item and use its interaction, right-click on the default keyboard setup.
- Open the backpack icon beside the character in inventory.

Prepare for the next upgrades
At Workbench Tier 3, the next upgrade uses 40 Cindercloth Scraps, 24 Heavy Leather and 8 Cobalt Ingots. Backpack Upgrade II requires 100 restored Memories. Check the named upgrade in the current menu before reserving materials.

Keep utility separate from emergency equipment
Update 5 allows Repair Kits to target items inside the Backpack. You do not need to move a stored tool solely to make it repairable.
Kingy inventory habit: store bulky construction supplies and spare tools in the extra space. Keep the items needed during a fight in your main inventory or hotbar. Leave spare capacity before entering a new area.
