Read the state through its livelihoods
A destination guide usually asks what a place offers its visitors. Leonida becomes more interesting when we also ask what keeps the place going for the people who live there. Rockstar’s regional introductions suggest several answers: tourism, industry, informal power and work around the water. Their differences give the state a social shape before we can draw a reliable map of it.

Vice City supplies the most familiar promise: sand, hotels, commerce and departures on a cruise. The wider state complicates the picture. An island chain is also where Jason works. A resort town has outlived its attractions. An industrial town depends on a refinery. These are useful contrasts because a place’s attraction and its source of income need not look the same from every position within it.

The official Keys panorama gives bridges and islands room to spread across the water. It is easy to read that openness as freedom. Jason’s biography adds a less scenic fact: this is where his present work ties him to local drug runners. The two descriptions can coexist. The view tells us what a place looks like; a working relationship tells us something about what it asks of a resident.

Port Gellhorn: after the visitors
Rockstar introduces Port Gellhorn through closed attractions, motels and empty malls. Its satirical account of the replacement economy centers on alcohol, painkillers and truck-stop energy drinks.

The important word is replacement. The end of a tourist boom does not make every transaction stop or every resident disappear. It changes what remains to earn a living from. Port Gellhorn’s introduction turns a place once organized around visitors into one described through diminished attractions and different forms of consumption. Its faded tourism is an economic condition as well as a visual mood.

Ambrosia: employment and influence
Allied Crystal’s sugar refinery supplies Ambrosia with jobs; a local biker gang supplies another form of influence. Rockstar frames the town’s industry through a tension between wealth, health and cost.

Here the pressure comes from what is still working. A major employer can offer stability while making a town dependent on its continued presence. Putting the refinery beside a biker gang also distinguishes a source of wages from another kind of local power. The introduction does not tell us exactly how those powers meet. It does make Ambrosia a useful companion to Port Gellhorn: one place is described after a lost draw, the other around an institution that remains central.

Grassrivers: a smaller human footprint
The Grassrivers image changes the scale of the comparison. A modest settlement sits among dense vegetation, with the surrounding wetland occupying much of the view. Set against the open Keys panorama, it gives water a different visual role: the environment presses closer around the visible buildings. That is a reading of two compositions, not evidence of a route between them or of how hard either place is to traverse.

Distance is another kind of promise. After the city’s spectacle and the towns’ economic pressures, Kalaga offers an image of withdrawal. Whether that means freedom, isolation or something less comfortable is a question the introduction leaves open. The larger pattern is already useful: Leonida contains different ideas of a good life, and different conditions for sustaining one.
