Dressmaker fabric planning: know each panel before cutting

The short answer

Hover over an inventory panel to see its location on the mannequin in Build 410. Assign a fabric to that location before cutting. Check front, back and matching pieces, then keep a short panel-to-fabric note so you can repeat the design.

Start with the panel hint

Build 410 adds a mannequin-location hint when you hover over an inventory panel. Use it to connect an unfamiliar flat shape to the part of the dress you intend to colour. The same patch clarifies clickable component names in the sketchbook.

An older video may suggest making a burlap mockup to identify every piece. Start with the newer hint; a mockup can remain an optional visual experiment, rather than a required step.

Write a small fabric map

Kingy suggests recording each panel’s location, exact fabric name and orientation. Use names displayed in your inventory and check colour tags separately from appearance.

Players in the gradient-silk discussion exchange screenshots with explanations of which component uses which fabric. That is a useful recipe format: the finished image shows the effect, while the placement note makes it repeatable. The linked discussion contains character/event spoilers.

  1. Identify all pieces that will use the selected fabric.
  2. Inspect the displayed grain-quality reading and the direction of any print.
  3. Arrange the pieces before committing cuts; check that the intended fabric is still selected.
  4. Recheck matching pieces and your back-panel choices before moving on.

Do not rely on recycling to undo every cut

Viewers on both selected videos warn that recycling does not fully restore material after excess fabric has been removed. Kingy has not reproduced that limit in-game, so treat it as a reason to inspect your layout before cutting, not as a tested recovery procedure.

If a colour assignment goes wrong, record the stage where it changed before trying a repair. Avoid repeating purchases or recuts while the selected fabric is still uncertain.

Keep the experiment useful

After finishing, record which placement worked and one change you would try next. In the creative studio, put the fabric-to-panel map beside the component names. Share your own screenshot separately with the recipe, and credit another player if their design inspired you.
