The short answer
The full-game Steam listing supports solo play, four-player split screen and online co-op for up to eight Steam friends. The demo’s multiplayer update also supports simultaneous split-screen and online play. Demo/full-game cross-version sessions have not been established by these sources.
Choose the session your group needs

Prepare the group before loading a world
This is a setup checklist, not a verified sequence of lobby buttons. Host controls, invite-menu labels, reconnect behavior and dedicated-server support still need a current-build check.
- Agree whether everyone is using the demo or Early Access, then update that version. Mixed demo/full-game compatibility is not confirmed.
- Choose the PC and player who will host the session, and arrange the Steam-friend connections needed for online play.
- Choose the local or online mode that fits the group and check that everyone reaches the same session before starting a long expedition.
- If moving from the demo, settle each player’s character-import choice first and plan for a new world.

If someone cannot join
First compare game edition and installed update, player count and whether the group is trying local or online play. Record the displayed error and whether the host can load the world alone. Avoid buying server hosting on the assumption that a Steam co-op badge promises a dedicated-server package.
Success means every intended player can join and control their character in the same session. Save the host and world name in your progress notes so the group can return to the same session.
