Castlevania: Belmont's Curse official cover art

Beginner tips for the first hours

Quick answer

Hit every dead-end wall, mark what you can't reach yet on the map, and go back after each boss, because new abilities such as the Arcane Whip and Holy Light open old paths. In fights, slide past attacks to get behind enemies, jump low swings, and stop after a few hits; outside them, pick up every red and blue book and finish your Arcana's Works of Mercy.

Before you start

  • Kingy has not played the released game. Each tip below is in at least two written guides unless it says otherwise.
1

Explore and backtrack

  1. Attack walls at dead ends and anything that looks cracked or recessed: many secret rooms sit behind breakable walls. One guide adds that some passages need a slide or the whip to reach.
  2. Open the map and add your own markers on locked chests, ledges you can't reach and suspicious walls. One guide says you can place 50 at once; remove a marker once you've cleared that spot.
  3. After each boss, check your markers. New abilities open paths you couldn't use before.

The two abilities that open the castle

See the boss pages for where those fights are and how to win them.

  1. The Arcane Whip comes after The Fallen. Use it to hook onto glowing anchors (and some enemies) to swing across gaps and spikes.

0:08–0:12 · 4 sHooking a glowing anchor with the Arcane Whip

When you see a glowing anchor ring above you, hook it with the whip and swing up through the gap it hangs beside.

  2. Holy Light comes after Joan. Hold the button to pass through Chaos Shards that block paths, and press it just before an attack lands to parry. Practise the parry on ordinary enemies first; its timing is much tighter.

Hold Holy Light so Rose glows, then walk into the Chaos Shards blocking the way to shatter them. Press the same button just before an attack lands to parry it.

Fight carefully

  1. Slide works as your dodge: slide through or past an attack to get behind an enemy, then hit it from behind.

  3. Stop after two or three hits in a boss's opening and back off, rather than finishing a combo and getting caught.

Make Rose stronger

  1. Pick up every red and blue book: red raises attack and blue raises defence.
  2. Collect Wise Heart Fragments: four of them enlarge Rose's mana bar. One guide says four red heart shards do the same for maximum health.
  3. Finish each Arcana's Works of Mercy, a checklist of challenges such as hitting 20 enemies with your starting fireball. Completing them makes the spell stronger.

Open Equipment, then Arcanas, and pick a spell: the Works of Mercy list on the right shows the challenges that strengthen it, and the middle column shows the upgrades they unlock.
