Before you start
- Windows and Steam. Match the server and client versions.
- For playing and hosting on one PC, the developer recommends 24 GB total RAM: 16 GB for the client plus 8 GB for the server. This is published guidance, not a Kingy performance measurement; check the server FAQ for larger groups.
- The source is dated May 18, 2026 for 0.10.0.5.120-073042fb; compare the installed DedicatedServer.md before starting.
Install, start and connect
- In Steam Library, enable the Tools filter and install Windrose Dedicated Server. Open Manage → Browse Local Files.
- Run StartServerForeground.bat and wait for an invite code in the console. If missed, the simple-setup instructions point to R5/ServerDescription.json. The same page also calls this a root-folder file: if it is missing, check the shipped DedicatedServer.md and generated files instead of creating a second configuration. Read InviteCode from the existing file.
- Open Windrose → Play → Connect to Server and enter the code with matching capitalization. The server must remain running.

Check the session before committing a long playthrough
Suggested player check: after joining, record the world name and a recognizable landmark. Leave and rejoin, then ask a friend to try while your game client is closed and the server remains running. Record each result separately; a console window alone does not establish that joining or persistence works.

Compare versions and the code first. Save the exact error and startup log for support. Stop the server before editing configuration. Invite-code and direct-IP connections have separate instructions; this quickstart covers the code route.
