The short answer
Update 0.4.0 ties herd group size to population health. Update 0.4.1 reports fixes for fluctuating trophy stars during ageing and several species-specific scoring problems.
Population health and herd size
The developer says healthier populations support larger groups while struggling populations shrink. This confirms a relationship, not an exact growth formula or an optimal culling percentage. A numerical herd calculator would need observations beyond these notes.

Trophy corrections in 0.4.1
The patch fixes ageing-related trophy-star fluctuations, low trophy fitness on Dall sheep, boar scoring relative to fitness and tusks, and wood bison horn issues. It also fixes new trophies appearing only after sleep or reload. Treat older reports in the context of the build they describe.

Record enough to compare animals
Our suggested record includes reserve, species, age stage, displayed trophy rating and build. Do not identify a universal ‘best animal to shoot’ from a single rating. Current guides are based on patch statements, with a verified scoring database still in the backlog.
