The short answer
Look for missions in the Way of the Sword category to follow the main story. Before the late-game cutoff, finish the optional activities you want to do. The mission name is hidden in the spoiler section below.
Before you start
- Match the mission name in your game. This page uses attributed published guides; Kingy has not completed or tested the campaign.
Separate the main route from optional activities
Dave Aubrey's VGC guide identifies Way of the Sword as the story mission category. It distinguishes Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters as optional activities, and describes Eastern Kyoto as a hub whose explorable area expands.
Use your active story objective to continue the campaign. If you are working on optional content, check its own objective before following a story marker.

Reveal the late-game mission to pause before Reveal solution / story details
VGC identifies The Clash at Rendaino as the point of no return leading into the finale. Finish the optional missions you care about before proceeding with that mission.

If progress stops at an upgrade or fight
If the Spirit Mirror is available but its enhancement options are missing, continue checking the story requirements: Capcom's Nintendo listing says mirror access and enhancement access unlock separately. Reaching a mirror alone does not establish that upgrades are ready.
For material shortages after purifying Yasui Konpiragu, PC Gamer's Wes Fenlon reports that Yorimasa sells upgrade supplies and expands his finite stock as the story advances. Check the current shop inventory before committing to a long material run. Kingy has not tested its stock gates.

Choose the next useful guide
Use the upgrade guide for Spirit Mirror access and the material-shop report. Use the combat guides for documented abilities and the Break Issen trigger. A named location or demo boss alone does not establish the next mission in your retail save.
