Pre-release coverage
Mojang’s September 29 co-op rules establish separate modes, couch co-op in both and online-backed hero progression. Conversion and handheld offline behaviour remain untested.

Choose by how you plan to play
The mode choice matters before you invest in progression. Mojang confirms separate online and offline modes and couch co-op in both. The article does not supply a conversion procedure.
| Your plan | Mode to inspect before creation | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Remote friends or mixed local/remote group | Online | Party connection and intended account |
| Local couch group without internet | Offline | Each player’s hero and local save behaviour |
| Handheld travel, then online friends | Treat this as two separate needs | Do not assume the same hero works disconnected and online |
Before confirming hero creation
These are pre-creation checks, not a tested reproduction of the warning screen. Existing heroes should be preserved; do not delete one to try another mode.
- Decide whether this hero is for remote co-op or disconnected play.
- Read the mode warning on your installed platform and capture its exact wording before confirming.
- Check the selected account and mode with your group. If the warning does not match your plan, back out before committing.
What online progression does establish
Mojang describes online-backed hero data. On supported platforms, signing into your platform account on another device can continue that hero; linked platform accounts using the same Microsoft account support cross-platform continuation. This does not establish offline-hero conversion or offline handheld access to an online hero.
Joining the first party
For remote friends, the official article describes an eight-character alphanumeric party code entered through Join by party code, with joining possible from the lobby or during a game. Confirm the intended hero before accepting the party.
Why handheld players are asking
A player reports that separate online/offline characters prevent taking their co-op character into disconnected Switch 2 play. This is a firsthand complaint, not a tested account of every platform’s save behaviour.
Disconnected play still needs verification
Before relying on a hero for travel, use a disposable test hero and check launch without internet, saved progress after restarting, and whether reconnecting changes the available hero list. We have not performed those tests or verified cloud conflict handling.
