Set up a Smelter, kiln and Forge

Turn your first ore haul into a working Bronze workshop, with separate construction and processing requirements.

The short answer

Build a Smelter and supply it with ore and Coal. A Charcoal Kiln provides Coal from wood; the Forge then combines refined metals. [1][2]

Build the processing stations

For an early source of Surtling Cores, explore Burial Chambers in the Black Forest. Do not assume every chamber contains enough cores for your entire workshop. [3]

A Smelter costs 20 Stone and 5 Surtling Cores. A Charcoal Kiln also costs 20 Stone and 5 Surtling Cores. Build them with the Hammer within Workbench range. [1]

Process ore into metal

Feed wood into the kiln and collect its Coal. Add Coal and Copper or Tin ore to their separate Smelter inputs; collect the refined metal it produces. [1]

The Smelter can operate outdoors. If you enclose it and processing stops, check the fuel, ore and smoke ventilation. A cramped sealed roof can be part of the problem. [1]

Finish the Forge

Reserve 6 refined Copper for the Forge itself, along with 4 Stone, 4 Coal and 10 Wood. Place it within Workbench range and provide shelter so you can use it. [2][4]

Editorial recommendation

Treat workshop construction as a separate budget from your Bronze. The Forge’s six Copper are not available to combine with Tin afterward. [2]
