Watch the retreat state
The retreat marker changes from red to yellow; yellow permits cancellation. Reinforcement can preserve a fighting unit but also drain resources. Exact costs, timings and balance numbers are not established here.

Commanders are a separate match setting
The multiplayer AMA describes choosing a commander before the match. By default it is produced from headquarters later, after unlocks and a resource cost. Custom settings can instead start with a commander or disable commanders. Record this setting when comparing openings; identical faction names alone do not describe the same starting conditions.
